There may be one Ring but there are two trilogies.

First we look at the similarities – Both trilogies were directed by Peter Jackson and based off the novels by JRR Tolkien. Both trilogies featured Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Ian McKellen as Gandalf. Both trilogies included the ring and Gollum. Both trilogies are about a hobbit who goes on a journey with a rag tag group to an evil looking mountain. Both ended with the Hobbit returning to the shire. And both climaxed with a great final battle in the third installment.

Now to look at the differences.

Material the Movies were based off of –

Lord of the Rings: Lord of the Rings was three movies based off three 400 page novels. Each installments of the cinematic trilogy was able to take on a phase of the over all story.

Hobbit: The Hobbit was three movies based off one 300 page book. Because they lacked the substantial amount of content from which to extract three films, the writers had to add story lines that did not film smoothly transition into the story and made it drawn out and annoying. Some examples are Gandalf’s side quest and the awkward and creepy love story of the red haired elf and the stupid dwarf who got shot in the leg.

Main Character –

Lord of the Rings: The main character of the Lord of the Rings is Frodo Baggins. He’s protrude by Elijah Wood. As a war forms and rages around the lands of Middle Earth Frodo and Sam journey to Mordor to throw the ring into the fires of Mount Doom. All the while Frodo resists the ring that tries to poses him. Frodo is brave, kind, and strong willed.

FRODO

Hobbit: THE Hobbit is Bilbo Baggins, Frodo’s uncle. He is played by martin Freeman who absolute shines in the role, but is pushed to the side by the whinny dwarf king! Bilbo is cautious yet adventures. He is a fast learner, brave, and loyal. Loyal to the dwarves he quests with, and to the shire he calls home.

Orcs –

Lord of the Rings: The Lord of the Rings was revolutionary to the film industry because of it’s practical special effects. Most of the Orcs in the movies are real people in costumes, masks, and prosthetic make up. They will always be my favorite of the two versions.

Hobbit: The Hobbit’s orcs were all animated and not well animated at that. Also, when did they start speaking a different langue? And why are they white? Enough said.

My last statement is this: There is no romance in Middle Earth… well except Arwen and Aragon. They are awesome!
